GO Finland is a digital game on the JIBBO’s website www.jibbo.net/gofinland/. Game is directed to immigrant and asylum seeker youngsters. Its goal is to familiarize them with the Finnishness. Project is funded by a grant from the Ministry of Education and it has started in March 2016.

During the last year lots of asylum seekers has come to the subregion of Seinäjoki. There lives also many foreign students in the town of Seinäjoki. Like every culture Finnish culture is different and there’s lots of new things and manners to learn. We started to think which would be inspiring way to teach conventions of Finnish culture to these youngsters and help them to acculture. Digital youth information is our theme during this year and digital game was something we haven’t tried before so it was easy decision.

Our project started with search of a suitable game developer. Goal was to find and employ young game developer. Game developing took three months during the summer so this was a good summer job to her. At the same time we started to gather ideas for the game content. Specialized Youth Worker helped us with her clients. We made an inquiry to these youngsters who are already accultured to life in Finland. Contents of GO Finland (=questions and claims) were created base on these inquiry answers.

Game language in GO Finland is English therefore as many youngsters as possible can play it. There are five different scenes in the game: people, manners, services, school and nature. In every scene there are 4 to 6 different objects to find and questions to answer. Questions types are variable not only “true or false” like. After answering player gets the feedback or right answer. Player can play all scenes through at one time or pick the most interesting ones.

Achievements:

Game was published in the beginning of October. During three weeks after game release about 100 players have played the game. Via our game site we have got some user feedback which has been encouraging:

”I liked that the tasks are all a little bit different. It gives variety and makes you wonder what will be on the next object.”
”The illustrations are really nice, especially the one of the Nature.”
“A really nice game, which is worth to play when you want to know more about Finland and understand Finns. It definitely is a better method to learn those facts with the game than just to read them.”

This project continues with active marketing. We hope that it reaches its target group and grows to the very good practice of youth information.
