The empowerment of young emerging journalists between 16 and 24 is one of the main goals of the project „Youth Reporter”. After a basic journalistic training facilitated by a renowned Austrian journalist, during which the participants experienced the simulated daily work life of an editorial office, our 1st generation of youth reporters started writing their first articles.
At the moment the Youth Reporters publish at least 1 or 2 articles every week on our website Österreichisches Jugendportal (Austrian Youth Portal), in their own blog-section. With December 2016 they wrote more than 65 articles and the blog had more than 6.000 unique pageviews. In addition on Facebook more than 70.000 people have seen the respective posts, which also got more than 1.250 likes. Furthermore, the Youth Reporters got invited to several important journalistic events, such as the women’s journalist congress, a digital barcamp and more. Also the minister for families and youth Dr. Sophie Karmasin welcomed them in her office for an interview.
With no drop-outs and a still highly motivated group of 21 young journalists, we plan our next training for the 2nd generation of Youth Reporters in spring 2017.
